Artificial Intelligence is spreading its presence into every possible industry. It has already started showing its impact on all the key industries like health, education, agriculture, etc. with its widespread advantages that help the industry to serve their customers effectively.

Emergence of Bots

The world before artificial intelligence was so much of manual activities and needs human presence in every part of life. Every industry want to serve better to their customers with the best quality of service. In order to provide such qualitative and quantitative services, manual intervention needs to be done among humans in every next level. Most of the iterative activities can be handled by bots so as to reduce human resources and this is where the introduction of bots came into the picture.

Artificial Intelligence In Bots

Soon after bots started working, they surpassed the speed of human service but with manual inputs provided to them. Even this bots needs manual intervention to ensure all the activities done by the bots are accurate in providing the data to their customers. When this is considered as problem statement, then came Artificial Intelligence to serve the need of bots to understand the data input to them and start analysing and working on the data served.

Before getting into AI with Journalism, let us look into some of the key areas where AI have already integrated.

Applications of Artificial Intelligence

Research and developments made Artificial Intelligence to be induced into every sector like agriculture, health, education etc. to serve better

Agriculture

In Agriculture Sector, crop and soil monitors(Trace Genomics, drones and computer vision, etc), predictive analysis(aWhere, FarmShots, etc), agricultural robots(Blue River Technology, Harvest CROO Robots) are few of amazing tools.

Education

Helping students in gradings, helping them in advanced concepts, courses needs to be done, working with feedback from students and teachers to improve education standards are the areas that can be handled by Artificial intelligence in Education Sector .

HealthCare

In this information age, automation made available in most of the industries include Health Care as major one. Recent survey reports more than 80 percent of the industry have already adopted Artificial Intelligence in managing medical reports, health care system analysis, etc.

Artificial Intelligence In Journalism

Literature is the only area where robots are lagging behind humans. Automated Journalism was introduced with bots to write short news, articles, blog posts etc. Top most Artificial Intelligence companies along with Data Science firms made research in developing algorithms to define how analytics can be done on the data provided in order to derive news to be delivered.

These news articles by automated robots mainly focus on human-readable outputs based on the statistics and data input to it. As there exist numbers in finance, sports and weather reporting, this made easy to robots to analyse those figures and represent in better way as news.

Successful Use Cases Of Automated Journalism

StatSheet (2011): Publishing platform updates about basketball team updates of divisions.

QuakeBot(2014): “ The Los Angeles Times” has used automated bot named QuakeBot to report about then California’s earthquake.

Minor League Baseball(2016): Associated Press, US media firm have used AJ to publish official news reports about Minor League Baseball, and its associate leagues as well.

Rio Olympics(2016): Washington Post has used AI to analyse and project live updates about the event. Earlier Rio Olympics 2012 data also used by robots to make news more interesting and informative.

Urbs Media With Press Association(2017): 30,000 news articles to be published by the artificial intelligence integrated robots was the new initiative by the Press Association, Leading UK News Agency.

Apart from these, there exist many use-cases where AI got successfully helped media in serving the optimal needs of many firms.

Next Big Thing : Fact-checking Bots: When it comes to trust factor, not all the news we come across can be trusted. This may be because of the news we read from the source, or the subject we believe was irrelevant to what stated in the news. The same is with automated journalism. One cannot guarantee the accuracy of the news, and this led to a new project to build by

the fullfact team, aimed to cross check all the LIVE and TRENDS mentioned in the news are factual with the help of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Challenges Faced By Artificial Intelligence in Journalism

  • Make sure the data available is sufficient to perform analytics.
  • Data made available may be in different formats like structured, unstructured etc.
  • Data accuracy cannot be verified by Artificial Intelligence unless the existing data have records about the new data.
  • Accountability involves human intervention as most of the business cannot rely solely on AI analytics.
  • Handling misinformation.

Future of AI in Journalism

Despite the existing challenges, we can expect more advanced challenges to be faced in the later years, as AI happening to be the next big thing in all sectors. Anticipating Artificial Intelligence will take over most of the human jobs, one cannot guarantee the completeness of AI integration into any field.

As per the words of Garry Kasparov(World Chess Champion to be beaten by a Machine), Where Machine Intelligence Ends and Human Creativity Begins.

we humans strive to make this world a better place to live, and put efforts in making Artificial Intelligence help us in every possible industry. So is with journalism to project news in better way with factual, accurate and up-to-date information.
